Did you know? To preserve aquatic wildlife, hydroelectric dams are equipped with fish passages
7 December 2017
Some fish species (salmons, eels…) need to migrate (spawning run and out-migration) to complete their life cycle, especially for reproduction. This explains why water impounding structures on waterways, such as hydropower plants, are equipped with specific constructions of “fish passages”, such as fish ladders (small pools in stairs), fish elevators, “eel’s mat” for young eels… Without such devices, those migrations would be difficult and sometimes impossible, potentially endangering the survival of the concerned species.
