Did you know ? Since 2015, interconnection capacities have been optimized at the scale of the Central-Western Europe region

On 6th June 2007, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed an agreement in the framework of the Pentalateral Energy Forum (PLEF, joined by Switzerland and Austria since then), aiming to improve calculation and allocation methodologies for interconnection capacities within the Central-Western Europe (CWE) region. Since then, many successive market coupling improvements have been implemented in order to optimize cross-border exchanges, thus creating economic gains for the community as a whole. In 2015, the Flow-based methodology was introduced: it aims at optimising not only interconnection capacities between two countries, but for the entire region, and in a more dynamic way. Market configurations that may appear counterintuitive at the scale of a single interconnection are therefore in reality optimized at a regional scale!
