Did you know? In 2016, electricity generation from hydraulic sources increased significantly

Hydroelectric production, which is France’s second energy source after nuclear, reached 63.9 TWh in 2016 or 12% of the national energy mix. While electricity production from coal and fuel oil heat sources decreased by 15.4% and 13.1% respectively, power generation from hydraulic sources rose by 8.6% thanks to significant rainfall at the end of spring. Moreover, electricity generation from solar increased by 11.3% to reach 8.3 TWh, or 1.6% of the national production. Even though wind energy production slightly dropped (-1.8%), 2016 was a good year for renewables, since they provided almost 20% of national consumption through a 5%-rise in production compared to 2015. France is therefore on the right track to develop renewable electricity (except for offshore wind turbines), but is substantially lagging behind to produce heat from solid biomass.
